Perfect for advanced users who want something different from the crowd, and a good choice for novices as well.

It would be easy to paint the latest release of KMPlayer from Pandora as just another free ad-supported media player, and that’s because in many ways that’s exactly what it is. But it’s also so much more than just that.

KMPlayer Review: Brilliant Versatile Lightweight Media Player

KMPlayer – perfect for both advanced and novice users.

Totally free

First things first though. KMPlayer is free; free to download and free to use forever, which is always nice. It’s also very light on system resources and will run smoothly on even Neolithic machines and devices (technology wise, anyway: You’re in trouble if you think you’ll be able to run an audio cassette through it.)

Plays literally everything

KMPLayer also plays just about any type of media file going such as VCD, DVD, AVI, MKV, Ogg Theora, OGM, 3GP, MPEG-1/2/4, WMV, RealMedia, and QuickTime among others.

As you would hope and expect it also has support for almost all subtitle formats as well, and showing them is as easy as right clicking and turning them on, if you want them. KMPlayer also has provisions for capturing audio, video, and screenshots.

Tweak away

Perhaps the biggest strength of KMPlayer however is just how highly customizable it all is.  KMPlayer can be almost endlessly tweaked by simply right clicking on the interface. From there users can discover and play with a whole host of features, including ‘3D-Subtitle-Control,’ ‘Pan & Scan,’ ‘Screen Controls,’ ‘Capture,’ and ‘Control Box.’ Users can even go further by opening the Preferences window where there are even more options to play with.

One notable surprise is the extra features for VR and 3D support, which really isn’t something you’d expect to find on something free, or as lightweight.

Great software, but watch out for the ads!

While KMPlayer itself is great, and free, users should take their time when installing, because it does come with some of that infamous ‘bundleware,’ but it’s easy to navigate past, and it’s also totally optional as well. The main screen also shows ads on the sidebar of the main interface, but thankfully they disappear when media starts to play.

Conclusions

Overall KMPlayer is a really good media player for both those users who want something easy and intuitive to use, and those who want to tweak and customize the settings to their hearts content.

It’s also completely free!
